Lymph nodes are small, pea sized, sacks located throughout the body. Lymph nodes house lymphocytes (white blood cells) and help with the filtration of lymph.
The nodes located under the jaw are classified as cervical lymph nodes (lymph nodes in the neck) and are specifically known as submandibular lymph nodes. There are 3-6 submandibular lymph nodes. The serve to drain the cheeks, side of the nose, upper lip, lower lip, gums, and the corners of the eyes (also known as the madera palpebral commissure). Swollen lymph nodes are most often an indication of infection. Sinus infection, the flu, and strep throat, are some common causes of swollen lymph nodes under the jaw. Bacterial infections, parasitic infections, and injury to the area can also cause lymph nodes to swell.

When infection occurs, specialized cells alert the body to produce more lymphocytes (white blood cells) in order to fight off the infection. The surplus of lymphocytes are stored in the lymph nodes lymphawhich causes them to swell. Swollen nodes that exhibit pain are usually an indication of an ongoing infection in the node. After a few days, the pain may subside but the swelling will remain. Once the pathogen has been neutralized, it needs to be broken down and eliminated. The swelling will dissipate once the lymphatic system has removed the broken down pathogen that caused the infection.  During this time, congestion in the lymph nodes can last for an extended period of time if there is not enough movement in the body. The lymphatic system doesn’t have a pump like the cardiovascular system does. It relies almost exclusively on muscle movement to push lymph along. For this reason, it is very important to get up and move. Even a 20 minute walk at a normal pace once a day can help move lymph.

Swollen Lymph Nodes Under the Jaw Causes

The best way to remedy swollen lymph nodes under the jaw is to find the root cause. Consider all infections and/or congestion in the head. Here are the most common causes of swollen lymph nodes under the jaw:

Allergic reaction

• Ear Infection

• Gingivitis

• Gum infection

• Influenza

• Injury

• Periodontitis

• Sinus congestion

• Throat infection

• Tooth infection

Less common causes include:

• Cancer

• HIV

• Leukemia

• Lupus

• Measles

• Mononucleosis

• Syphilis

• Tubercolosis

One of the most effective natural remedies for swollen lymph nodes is Nature’s Sunshine Lymphomax. It is a blend of bayberry, yarrow, mullein, and garlic. This powerful combination of herbs helps support and cleanse the lymph nodes and improve immune system function.  Lymphomax should be taken according to the instructions on the container. In times of great lymphatic congestion, this product can be taken in greater quantities up to two capsules every 2 hours. This combination is not suitable for vegans or vegetarians as the capsule is made of bovine gelatin. For vegans, each of the ingredients found in Nature’s Sunshine Lymphomax can be purchased separately from Nature’s Answer—all of their products are vegan and high quality. Whichever path you take, these herbs will collectively support the immune and lymphatic systems in the fight against pathogens. When taking any herbal product, remember to drink plenty of water, especially when the objective is to cleanse the body.

Home remedies for swollen lymph nodes under the jaw include eating immune-stimulating foods such as: garlic, ginger, lemons, beets, elderberries, and turmeric, to name a few. Begin by slowly incorporating them into your daily diet and eat as many raw fruits and vegetables as you can. Drink lemon water on a daily basis to help alkalize your body and detox the lymph nodes. Lemon water is inexpensive, easy to make, and has many great health benefits; see the recipe here. Exercise is also key when trying to eliminate swollen lymph nodes. Stagnant lymph can become thicker until it reaches the consistency of cottage cheese. The lumpy fluid clogs the lymph node and becomes more difficult to eliminate. All of this means the immune system has less room for pathogen-fighting lymphocytes, pathogens can not be eliminated, and the immune system becomes compromised.benefits of lemon water
