For decades, researchers have conducted studies to find the association between arthritis and diet, attempting to find whether certain foods prompt symptoms and which soothe them. Some answers have been found in natural foods. The answer may lie in nutrients that calm inflammation, a common symptom of rheumatoid arthritis. These natural remedies for arthritis pain are readily available and fairly inexpensive. An additional benefit of these remedies is their lack of negative side effects.

SAM-e (S adenosylmethionine)

SAMe is produced from a naturally occurring amino acid. Doctors are not completely certain how pain is tamped down by it, but it reduces inflammation and may raise levels of dopamine and serotonin, two feel-good brain chemicals. According to studies by the University of Maryland School of Nursing and the University of California, Irvine, SAM-e was proven to be as effective as some NSAIDs (such as ibuprofen and naproxen) in relieving osteoarthritis pain. The study also showed SAM-e could reduce pain by 50% after 60 days. Additionally, SAMe created fewer stomach problems and no cardiovascular dangers compared to normal meds. SAM-e is available in tablets and should be taken according the label on the bottle or as directed by your health care provider.

Shark cartilage

Shark cartilage is a natural nutritional supplement. It is made of shark cartilage and contains phosphorous, calcium, and complex carbs. Shark cartilage has been proven to reduce pain and stiffness in knees. The reason being it contains mucopolysaccharides, potent anti-inflammatory molecules. Dr. Joseph Orcasity, a consultant at the University of Miami Medical School, used shark cartilage to treat twelve senior citizens experiencing severe knee pain associated with arthritis. After using shark cartilage for four weeks, the majority of patients experienced reduced pain and swelling as well an increase in mobility. Shark cartilage is available in capsules and can be found at various health food stores.

Horsetail

Horsetail is a non-flowering plant. It’s rich in silica- a mineral essential in forming tendons and bones. It encourages the absorption of calcium and helps repair bones. Horsetail is typically recommended to speed up the healing of fractured bone. It may also help to remedy osteoporosis. A 2012 study published in “Cell Proliferation” scientist conducted in vitro research to examined how horsetail interacts with human bones cells. The results showed horsetail extract induced the growth of bone cells. They concluded that horsetail extract may have potential in regenerating human bone. Horsetail supplements come in capsules, tablets, and liquid extract.
